Memphis Abuse Allegations Timeline

February, 2004
Memphis diocesan officials say seven priests in the diocese have been accused of sexual misconduct with a minor. The report is part of a national inventory of such allegations by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. The diocese does not name the priests. It says one of the priests was removed after he was accused. The diocese also discloses paying $10,000 for counseling and therapeutic services for victims.

July, 2004
Blain and Blair Chambers file a civil lawsuit in Circuit Court claiming Father Richard Mickey sexually abused them in 1980 when they were students at Bishop Byrne High School and Mickey was a teacher who had not yet become a priest.

An unidentified 18-year-old man files another civil suit claiming he was sexually abused in 2000 by former priest Juan Carlos Duran when Duran was a priest at Church of the Ascension.

August, 2004
Mickey is placed on administrative leave and denies any wrongdoing as the church appoints former district attorney general John Pierotti to head its internal investigation.

September, 2004
Prosecutors in St. Louis get a warrant for the arrest of Duran on a criminal charge of sodomizing a boy while he served as a priest there.
Federal officials tell the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that they are also investigating an allegation that Duran abused a boy at a religious retreat in the Chicago area.

As part of the Duran lawsuit, attorneys for the diocese admit that Duran abused the boy and that Duran admitted to church investigators in 2000 that he exposed himself to the teenager.
